Hi Vera! I wanted to follow up here now that I've posted a revised version of this article. In doing further research to post a revision, I had the chance to learn more from and speak with Ryan Heavy Head, a Blackfoot scholar given grant funding by the Canadian government to research the Blackfoot influence on Maslow. He does not view this story as a tale of cultural appropriation, though he shared that there are multiple narratives within the Blackfoot community about what happened. In his eyes, what Maslow created in his Hierarchy of Needs is rather different than what the worldview of the Blackfoot, who situate everything in place and in community. If you have the chance, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts after reading the revised version of the post here, especially considering the difficulty of arriving at a "historical truth" amidst multiple narratives of what happened.
